How to Update a Gold Mirror with Chalk Paint

I found a dated gold mirror at a church sale not long ago and I knew it would look fabulous with a coat of paint. This month, I’ve joined my blogger friends from The At Home DIY group for another fun challenge. As the theme is “update with paint”, I will show you how to update a gold mirror with chalk paint.
Note: This post contains affiliate links for your convenience. If you click one of my links and make a purchase, I will receive a small commission but it won’t cost you a penny more.

Here’s what you’ll need:
- Mirror – Look for one with raised details. I paid just $7 for mine.
- Painter’s tape
- Chalk Paint – I used Home Decor Texture Chalk in Dove Gray.
- Paint brush
- Sanding sponge
- Wax and wax brush – I will use Dixie Belle Best Dang Wax in Clear
- Cotton cloth

Step 1.
Give the mirror a quick cleaning. My go to furniture cleaner is White Lightning by Dixie Belle. Next, attach painter’s tape to the inside perimeter of the mirror.

Step 2.
Paint the gold mirror frame with chalk paint. Be sure to get into all of the nooks and crannies on the raised details. Let dry at least 30 minutes and apply a second coat.

Step 3.
Sand the raised details with a sanding sponge to expose some of the gold paint. This will really make the details stand out.

See the difference!
Step 4.
Apply wax with a wax brush and then buff with a cotton rag. I ran out of time and didn’t get to finish this step, but I’ll go back later.

I really love how the mirror looks now! I styled it temporarily in my front entry. I’ll be bringing it to my antique booth as mirrors are good sellers. I hope this post showed you how easy and fun it can be to update a gold mirror with chalk paint!

I like that you painted a mirror with chalk paint. I am getting ready to try that myself but your mirror is so much prettier.
I have several gilded gold mirrors and other gold decor in my house. This is such a lovely way to soften and update the look for my home. The floral detail is beautifully showcased in the method that you used. Thank you so much for sharing this great DIY idea.
Love this project, especially the raised details. Perfect! And the price? Amazing! Great job!
Thanks Marty! I do love a bargain 😉
The mirror is so pretty! I love that you allowed the gold to show through on the detailed parts.
Thanks Michelle! Yes, the exposed gold paint really makes the floral details pop!
I like the new fresh look! Especially with some of the gold exposed.
Thank you for sharing.
Thanks Meegan! I was very happy with how it turned out!
This turned out great! I have two mirrors that I picked up at garage sales several years ago. They had that same gilded look. At the time chalk paint wasn’t a huge thing, so I spray painted them. It’s probably time for an upgrade, so I will have to try this!
Thanks Cherryl! Chalk paint has definitely been a game changer!
Love how this frame turned out for the mirror! Chalk paint truly is magic. Thanks so much for sharing!
Thanks Martina! I agree…chalk paint can work wonders!
So pretty! This should sell very quickly!
Thanks Paula! I sure hope so!
