As the seasons begin to change, update your living room with these simple, cozy and budget friendly fall decor ideas.

I’m thrilled to once again join a talented group of blogging friends for the Celebrate Fall Home Tour, graciously hosted by Leen from Sand Dollar Lane. If you’re stopping by after a visit with Meegan from What Meegan Makes, welcome! I’m sure you enjoyed her fall decor!

How to Style a Sofa with Fall Throw Pillows

I love how easy it is to transition to each season with the addition of some new throw pillows! You don’t need to spend a lot of money, either. The pillows I chose are all from Walmart!

Here are some simple tips:

  • Choose a color scheme. You can use neutral throw pillows or multicolor throw pillows, but keep it to just two or three colors.
  • Pick a combination of patterns and solid colors.
  • Vary the size and textures of the pillows.
  • Add a cozy throw to the couch in coordinating colors.
  • Use an odd number of pillows. I used five pillows on my couch.

I chose a yellow, orange and green color scheme. I love the bold pops of color and the contrasting floral, plaid and striped patterns against our neutral Pottery Barn couch.

How cozy looking is this white knit throw pillow?

This oblong throw pillow steals the show! I love textured throw pillows, and this has both a nubby and fuzzy texture. Plus, it’s also a tassel throw pillow, which is another cute detail.

And finally, I love how the floral embroidered throw pillow pulls all of the colors together!

How to Decorate a Tray for a Coffee Table

To complete my fall living room decor, I styled the coffee table with a round basket style tray and some coffee table books.

Try these tips:

  • Combine new and vintage items for interest.
  • Tie in the color scheme from the rest of the room.
  • Use odd numbers of items in your tray vignette.
  • Add different textures.
  • Vary the height of your objects.
  • Put a decorative item atop a stack of coffee table books.

The yellow half jug lantern is vintage, along with the green glass urn and books. I found the orange velvet pumpkin and faux floral stems at Dollar Tree. The basket tray is from Michaels Arts and Crafts.

I even found a book in my stash that had complimentary colors! I put it on the top of my book stack, which was topped with a vintage green and orange bowl with a grapevine orb inside.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How can I decorate my living room in the fall?

A: The easiest way to add fall flair to your living room is to add throw pillows in fall colors. Drape cozy throw blankets on couches. Add decorative fall accent pieces (pumpkins, leaves, acorns, etc) to your mantel and create fall vignettes in a tray on the coffee table.

Q: How can I decorate for fall cheap?

A: First, use what you already have on hand. A bag of apples becomes a centerpiece when put in a bowl or basket. Use natural elements from outside, like pinecones, twigs, acorns, leaves, etc. Get crafty and make your own decor! Shop at a thrift store or the dollar store for great deals on decor.

Q: How do I make my house cozy for fall?

A: Being cozy is all about the senses. Light scented candles or simmer orange peels and cinnamon sticks on the stove. Make baked apple crisp or sip mulled cider. Play relaxing music. Make sure everyone has a pair of slippers and a warm blanket to snuggle under on the couch.
