Hello there!  Thanks for stopping by!  Today I’m going to show you how to make a Faux Grass Spring Decor Box.

Note: This post was originally published on March 25th, 2019 and updated on February 26, 2021.

I’m happy to be participating in a Spring Blog Hop with some very talented bloggers.  If you’re here after a visit with my friend Chas from Chas’ Crazy Creations, welcome!  I just love her planters! There are links to all of the blogs on the tour at the end of this post. You are sure to find plenty of spring decorating ideas!

I was inspired by some faux grass decor I saw at Home Goods, but it was very pricey.  I knew I could create something cute for a fraction of the price.  My first stop?  The Dollar Tree, of course!

Faux Grass Spring Decor Box Supply List

green rectangular box, fake onion grass, excelsior moss, block of floral foam, leaf stencil and paint
  • 4 stems of onion grass from Dollar Tree
  • 1 brick of floral foam
  • excelsior, Spanish or reindeer moss (I used excelsior)
  • wooden rectangular box
  • stencil (mine is from A Maker’s Studio)
  • paint and stencil brush

I love this old painted box.  I think using a vintage piece gives the whole look more character than something made with just new materials.  And the color was perfect to coordinate with the grass. If you don’t have an old box, you can paint and distress an unfinished wooden box.

Step 1.

Position stencil where you want it on the box.  This is a mesh stencil and it has a sticky backing to keep it in place.  If using a regular stencil, secure it in place with painter’s tape.

Step 2.

Apply paint to the stencil.  I used Chalkart from A Maker’s Studio, which is applied with a spreader. If using a traditional stencil, apply paint with a stencil brush.

Step 3.

Remove the stencil and admire your work!

Step 4.

Determine the placement of the grass in the floral foam and create holes in the foam.

Step 5.

Apply hot glue to the bottom of the floral foam.

Step 6.

Position the floral foam towards the back of the box, with equal space on both sides.  Hot glue the foam to the bottom of the box

Step 7.

Insert the onion grass into the holes, and fill in the box with excelsior moss.  Continue adding excelsior moss around the grass until no floral foam is visible. Done!

Doesn’t this say Spring to you?

I created a vignette with a sweet cast iron bunny holding a Spring bouquet in his backpack that I borrowed from my DIY tiered tray.

I also styled the Faux Grass Spring Decor Box in front of my Frosted Mirror. It would look great on a mantel or an entry table! Check out how I used it as a centerpiece on my St. Patrick’s Day Tablescape.

I hope you’re inspired to try making a faux grass Spring decor box of your own!  It’s a fun craft, and it costs less and is more unique than the big box store version.

Now it’s time to check out what my friends have been making for Spring! Next on the hop is Kirsten from Tribe of Burton. You’re going to love her spring styling tips!

Until next time!

Rebecca
