Dollar Tree Valentine’s DIY Puzzle Piece Heart Craft

dollar tree valentine's diy puzzle piece heart craft wall hanger

The last time I was at Dollar Tree, I bought a raw wood heart cut out. I didn’t yet have a plan for it, but I was sure that I’d come up with some type of Dollar Tree Valentine’s DIY project.

My inspiration came from something I saw on Pinterest. Of course, I put my own spin on it. I love that you can make this craft with all Dollar Tree supplies!

Today, I’ve teamed up with some of my creative blogger friends for a Valentine’s Blog Hop! At the bottom of this post, I’ll share photos and links to 11 more inspiring Valentine’s Day projects 🙂

craft supplies needed to make a heart and puzzle piece wall hanger

Supply List:

  • wooden heart shaped cut out
  • red and white craft paint
  • 12 puzzle pieces (mine are from a kid’s puzzle)
  • letter stencils (I used A Maker’s Studio stencils)
  • medium and small paintbrushes
  • hot glue gun and glue sticks
  • thin ribbon in complimentary colors

Step 1.

Paint the heart cut out white on one side. Let dry and apply a second coat.

Step 2.

Apply two coats of red paint to the underside of the puzzle pieces.

Step 3.

Arrange the puzzle pieces around the heart. It doesn’t have to be perfect yet. Just make sure the puzzle pieces stay inside the heart.

Step 4.

Figure out the placement of the stencils. You may need to overlap. Hold the stencils in place, if needed, with painter’s tape. I used mesh stencils that have an adhesive.

Step 5.

Stencil the top words first and let dry.

Step 6.

Carefully stencil the bottom words and let dry.

Step 7.

Fill in any errors with a small paintbrush. The look will be imperfect and handmade. If you prefer something more exact, you can create the sentiment with a Cricut or Silhouette.

Step 8.

Arrange the puzzle pieces just how you’d like them around the heart. Secure them in place with hot glue. Attach a ribbon hanger and you’re done!

I styled mine against a vintage frame with a chalkboard background to make it pop. It would look great on a mantel! You could also hang it as is on a door or even attach it to a wreath (like this Burlap Valentine’s Wreath that I made last year). It’s a fun way to add some Valentine’s cheer to your decor!
